How do I convert one cryptocurrency to another?

If you want to convert your cryptocurrency from one coin to another, you’ll need to sell it.


Here's how

Step 1: Create a crypto wallet for your new coin

If you haven’t already, you’ll first need to create a crypto wallet for the coin you want to convert to.

As an example, you have Bitcoin in your BTC wallet, and you want to convert it to Ethereum (ETH). The first step would be to add an Ethereum wallet.

  1. Sign in to your Luno account and select Build a Portfolio

  2. On the Choose an investment screen, select Create a crypto wallet

  3. On the Choose a wallet screen, choose the crypto wallet you want to create

  4. Then, select CREATE WALLET

  5. Once you’ve created your wallet, it will display under a collapsible Total crypto header on the main Wallets screen


Step 2: Sell your crypto to get the new coin

Now that you’re created your new crypto wallet, follow these steps to sell the crypto for the one you’d like to convert to.

  1. From the Wallets screen, select SELL from the options at the top

  2. On the Choose crypto menu, select the cryptocurrency you want to sell (the one you want to convert from)

  3. Choose the cryptocurrency you want to sell it for (the one you want to convert it to)

  4. Enter the amount of cryptocurrency you want to sell, then select NEXT

  5. You’ll see a screen showing the details of your transaction. Select CONFIRM if you’re happy to proceed

  6. If you’re using the Luno app, you’ll need to enter your Luno PIN to finalise the transaction

Success! You’ve just ‘converted’ your cryptocurrency by selling one coin for another.

When you sell cryptocurrency, certain limits apply. You’ll need to make sure that you’re selling an amount above the minimum limit and below the maximum limit. You can find the maximum and minimum limits for all our currencies here.

You’ll only be able to choose from cryptocurrencies that you’ve already created a wallet for. To create a new wallet, follow the steps here.
